Functional Reading Comprehension Curriculum

Β

Real reading. Real life. Finally, a curriculum built for your students.

This Functional Reading Comprehension Curriculum is a complete, cohesive, no-prep life skills reading program designed specifically for high school and transition-age students receiving special education services.

Across 19 lesson units β€” a full school year of instruction β€” students will build real-world reading comprehension skills through high-interest functional texts that reflect the modern lives they're already living. It’s unlike anything else on the market today.

This isn't a hodgepodge of random worksheets. This is structured, purposeful, sequential instruction built for self-contained and resource room classrooms β€” everything you need to teach functional literacy, all in one place.

Β

What is functional reading?
Phone alerts warning of severe weather. Signs directing students to their seat at a venue. Assembly instructions for the furniture in their first apartment. Terms of service agreements they need to sign.

The reading demands of daily life are functional reading β€” and for teens and young adults with special needs, building the skills to navigate them confidently can be life-changing.

This no-prep curriculum makes teaching those skills simple, structured, and stress-free.

How This Curriculum Is Sequenced:
This curriculum is intentionally designed (using evidence-based research) to build reading comprehension skills. Students are encouraged to use technology to support word recognition at every stage, freeing them to focus entirely on what matters most: understanding what they're reading and how to use that information in real life.

Β

The curriculum moves deliberately from low to high comprehension demand:
Short texts (phrases to a single sentence) β€” Students build foundational comprehension with high-frequency functional texts like signs, alerts, and labels. Low demand, high relevance, early success.

Medium texts (2+ sentences to 1–2 paragraphs) β€” Students apply comprehension strategies to household, vocational, health, and technology-based texts that require inference and interpretation.

Long texts (3+ paragraphs) β€” Students tackle the most complex comprehension demands: legal documents, medical forms, personal and academic documents that require synthesis and critical thinking.

This progression ensures students aren't just reading β€” they're systematically building the comprehension skills and confidence to understand whatever text real life puts in front of them.

All lesson units follow the same structure and question patterns β€” giving students the repetition they need to internalize evidence-based reading comprehension strategies. The wide variety of topics and real-world texts keeps lessons fresh and students engaged across the full year.

What's a Growing Bundle?
This curriculum currently includes 7 lesson units and will grow to include 19 lesson units. By purchasing as a growing bundle, you're getting resources now and will receive all future additions for FREE β€” at the best possible price. The price increases as each new unit is added, so buying earlier saves you the most money.

Β

What Students Will Learn:
Through explicit instruction and repeated practice across a variety of functional text types, students will:

  • Read expository, descriptive, and narrative texts with purpose and growing independence
  • Activate background knowledge to deepen comprehension before and during reading
  • Develop an internal dialogue while reading to monitor their own understanding
  • Apply five key reading comprehension strategies: visualization, summarization, integration, text association, and comprehension self-monitoring
  • Use technology to independently build vocabulary and word meaning
  • Build confidence and stamina across a wide variety of real-world reading expectations β€” a perfect support for IEP reading comprehension goals

Throughout every lesson unit, students are encouraged to use technology to support word recognition β€” so they can focus their energy entirely on comprehension. This approach removes decoding as a barrier and keeps the instructional focus where it belongs: on understanding and responding to real-world text.

The Texts That Matter:

Students won't be reading made-up passages designed for a generic classroom. They'll be reading the kinds of functional texts they actually encounter β€” phone weather alerts, retail and restaurant signage, ticket and venue information, assembly directions, lease agreements, menus with food allergy labels, warning and hazard tags, after-visit summaries from a doctor's appointment, and much more.

Every unit is built around real-world texts that modern teens and young adults encounter at home, in their communities, and in the workplace.

Created with teens and young adults in mind, students will see themselves in every question, scenario, and example. Real text, real environments, and real moments of student life.
